New Calendar Pieces

Today we decided to make our room look more like parts of Africa. Our March calendar will be host to a few zebra, giraffe, and lions.
Just so you know, there has been a major change in McKay's policies to birthday parties. Starting March 1st, we will be celebrating birthdays without treats. Please look in your child's backpack to see the full explanation of this decision.
Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Spelling

Today I introduced a new spelling game. It is called "Pig". Students worked in pairs and took turns spelling words to eachother. This weeks spelling rule is "ic". MC and JS had fun with it.
So did HS and TL.

SB was a little more serious with it.

Snow

Before I forget, a couple reminders: We are in charge of bringing in baked goodies for the Friday bake sale. Please send items to school this Friday morning. The other thing is we need to wear red, white, and/or blue on Monday for the Patriotic Assembly. (Any members of clubs,Boyscouts, Brownies... can wear their uniforms)
We were so excited today when we woke up and saw that it was snowing.
We went out and worked together to make snowmen. This is "Sam" the snowman. Some of us fell in LOVE!

Ahhh....fresh falling snow.

We even gave up some of our winter clothing to make our snowmen.

Early in the morning, our snowmen started out small.
This is CS with his first snowball.
This is RL with her snowman.
First thing this morning, we went to the computer lab to research our African animal.
This is CA highlighting the information that he printed from the Internet.
After lunch we learned a new math game.
It is called Handful of Treasure. It teaches us how to rename when subtracting.
This is SA counting out our treasures.
We started with 90 treasures and then took turns taking out handfuls out. Then we would figure out what the answer was and show it using our tens blocks and ones.
BR and RL were partners. Here they are working the problem.
JW and JS are "proving" their answer here on paper.
JS is setting up his math problem.
SA and JC did a great job working together and explaining their thinking to eachother.

Scrapbooking

Today we put our Valentine's Day pictures in our scrapbook. We decided to go with black and white photos.
This is BR placing his his words on his page.
I always enjoy our scrapbooking time. By the end of the year, we should have a pretty neat memory book of second grade.

Finished Banner

Today we finished our Patriotic banner. We also started our next newsletter. This is SB and SB working together.
This afternoon we got together with our second grade buddies.
They convinced me to share my gumballs with everyone.

EM and GGB were proud of their marble tower.

Patriotic Assembly

Happy early Birthday CC. C mom brought in cupcakes and juice for us today. Then he entertained us with some karaoke.
Yesterday we started putting together our banner for the Patriotic Assembly.
We tore small squares and
then puzzled them into a flag heart.

Valentine's Day

What an exciting day we have planned. We began by passing out our Valentines to eachother.
Later on in the morning, during math time, we counted and graphed some Starbursts.
First everyone graphed their own candy.
Then they combined theirs with everyone at their table.
We have been working with larger numbers.

We could hardly wait for the afternoon to get here. But it did arrive and we had a great party. JS's mom made these wonderful cookies. And BL brought these yummy chocolate chip cookies.
SA brought rice crispies too.

After we ate, we opened our Valentine cards.

I think this is our happiest day of the year.

We hope you all had a fun filled day with friends and family.

Important Hats

Since today is Abraham Lincoln's birthday,

we made tall hats like his to put our Valentine cards in. This is SB showing her finished hat.

And this is EM with hers.

This is BL and MC having fun waiting for their glue to dry.

It was also the 100th day of school.

SA looking through her tall hat.

Here the boys wanted to model their hats even before they were finished.

Early this morning we worked in our math packets.
CF got a new packet and this is a video of his friend helping him to make sure he undestands it.
We are reading Mr. Popper's Penguins. Today's chapter was about Captain Cook (the penguin) collecting little objects around the house. He wanted to make his rookery with them. We decided to search our room and see if we could find any strange objects. Surprise, we did find some things! This is EM with all that we found.
Today is the 1st of February, so we decided to paint some hearts to decorate our room.
Before we started painting, JS wanted to show us how he draws a heart.
Isn't this cute? J, you are very artistic.
Here is SB and AB painting small hearts for our calendar.

Then we broke out the big paper and painted with a partner to create large hearts for our bulletin board.

Hmmm....guess who I had to keep my eyes on???? Which one do you think is the orneriest?
(answer below)

Answer: BOTH! (ha ha)
