Reading the Newspaper(s)

I brought in the newspaper article that was about our classroom and everyone enjoyed reading it today.

Each morning we start our day with reading an article from the Tween Tribune website. We love to find math in our reading and KB challenged us to solve her multistep math problem based on the story.  She asked, "How much will Mitik weigh when he is 16 weeks old?"

Check out Tween Tribune and let us know what you enjoyed reading about.

Video Projects

Boy do we have a treat for you!
Last week we came up with a list of things we do at school that maybe you don't completely understand. No worries, we are in the process of writing a script and then we will produce a short video to explain it all to you.

We are working in small groups and really focusing on listening to each other. I am very pleased with how well everyone is participating and valuing their partners.

The East Oregonian came in today and wants to run an article on idevice projects, so you might get to read about us in two locations, here and in the newspaper.

We will post the finished videos here on the blog when they are complete.

Special Visitors

Today we joined a webcast with Taylor Swift and Scholastic. Students from around the United States asked questions about how she grew up and about her success. She emphasized reading anything and everything, learn as much as you can, and surround yourself with people that make you feel good.

Later this afternoon we completed our first ebook.

Just as we went to see it all put together, Susan, our custodian came in and said she heard we were making a book and wanted to see it. We thought, "Cool, our first book and first audience member!" Well, it got even better. She brought us some homemade pie to celebrate!

We ended the day feeling pretty special.
What has someone done for you that made you feel special or appreciated? We would love to hear your stories.

Pumpkin Patch on Monday

Monday we will be going to Bellinger Farms in Hermiston. We will load the school bus at 8:30 and arrive close to 9:10. Please check the weather and help your child dress appropriately. I am afraid it looks wet and cold, but maybe we'll get lucky.

Edmodo

Now that we have been using Edmodo for a bit, we are ready to join other 3rd graders from around the state and become pen pals. We will be visiting and collaborating on a variety of projects. It should be a great adventure. TP is our local expert and shared some fun features of the program today.

Basket & Bingo Night

Parent's Club is running a Basket & Bingo Night November 15th, from 6:30 to 8:00, as a fund raiser. I signed our class up to fill a basket with Cooking Items. Who doesn't need new kitchen stuff? Donations can be delivered to our classroom basket any time. Our Parent's Club works hard to enrich McKay students and I hope that you can support them by donating and participating in this event.

Welcome Ted

AG was our mystery person today and she brought in her friend, Ted.

We have been working on our autobiographies. Here are a few paragraphs from a couple different students. We will record them using Audioboo and then connect a QR Code to it. Later on when we publish books, we will put our autobiography in the back of the book so others can hear them.

Feeling Special

Last week MB was our Minute to Win it CHAMPION! She was able to place 8 pencils on the back of her hand, flip them in the air, and catch them all with one hand.

I enjoyed going to AO's football game the other night. Thank you for inviting me A.

Last week SA gave me one of the sweetest gifts ever. Here is the note she made me, and needless to say, I put it on my door so I start every day with it.

( spelling translation - obvious)

She didn't stop with that either. She also gave me all kinds of treasures. This meant a lot to both of us. SA I am so glad you are at McKay!

We are working on memorizing our multiplication tables and could use some extra help at home. We are focusing on everything from 1x1 to 10x10 for now (up to 12X12 later).

Art Work

Here is a poster I made during the first week of school that everyone is really enjoying, so I wanted to share it with you too.

Last week we finished our pumpkin paintings. First we drew the pumpkins and then traced those lines with Elmer's glue. After the glue dried, we painted our pumpkins trying to shade them so they would look 3 dimensional. What do you think of our art? Did you ever draw or paint pumpkins when you were growing up? What did they look like?
