A Lot of Writing Today

Here is TC being interviewed by the class for his birthday book.
We each asked him a question ....
and then went to our tables to type up a page for his book.
This is DE and SR working together.
This is BB and NS together.
One person helps with spelling, or the flow of the sentence,
while the other person types. Then they switch.
Here you can see KZ with a sticky note that has a harder
word written on it for her work with CL
Hopefully we will have time tomorrow to download
and illustrate our writing and then give it to our latest birthday boy.

Round Up Painting

This week BT joined us at school.

With Round Up this week in our town,

we just had to find some funny cowboy stories to read.

Here are two that we really enjoyed.

Then we started drawing cowboys.

Some of us worked with a partner to create our work while others chose to work alone.

Below you will see pictures of our projects as they develop.

Off To A Great Start

We are off to a great start of our new school year.
These boys were happy to see each other again after the summer break. NS and BB enjoying recess on the first day of school.Good times together.

This years group of students know each other well and are very close friends.

We are lucky enough to have an interactive white board in our classroom.
Here you can see TC adding money to his bank.
L is enjoying a good book during reading block.
We had our first birthday celebration this week.
Here is LH posing for her picture that we will use on the cover of
her birthday magazine.
Wednesday we took a math test.
NE used his number line on a few problems.
J worked on the floor so that she could work independently.
N checked her work using her fingers.
ML found a good spot to enjoy his book.
Here the girls are partner reading during reading block.
We are making a scrapbook of our school year and on this day
we were transferring our first day of school writing onto our AlphaSmarts.
AlphaSmarts are very similar to laptop computers, but more kid friendly.
DL is very focused as he works on his writing.
On Friday we had our "Welcome Back To School" assembly.
The Round Up court came...
our school mascot, Bucky, gave one of the princesses a ride.
The Happy Canyon Princesses came too.
We also wanted to help Mrs. Miltenberger get comfortable in her new role
as Principal. Fifth grade students gave her "cowgirl" items to help her
look the part.
It has been a great first week of school.
Thank you parents for all your help getting us up and ready for this year.
I appreciate how quickly you got all the school papers filled out and returned to school.
I will update the blog 3-4 times a week so please visit it often to see what
is happening in our room.

Fun Activities to End the Year

Today we honored Mrs. Curtis as she is retiring this year. We lined the path and greeted her as she arrived to school after the parents club and Bucky escorted her to school.
Tuesday we had our primary field day. Unfortunately it rained, so we took the events inside.
Here is JS on the hoppy horse.
Here is AB with a friend playing the coconut relay.
This is JD trying to keep his ping pong ball on the spoon as he travels around.
Thursday this week we received our Promethian Interactive board. We spent a little time getting use to it today. We used the paint tools and played around with some pictures of McKay's teachers. This is BL giving me some sunglasses.
We also did a new science experiment.
Here CS is trying to get the egg into the jar without actually touching it.
Wah lah...he does it. He was able to hit the pie plate, just right to knock it off, which moved out of the way before the egg dropped right where he wanted it...in the glass of water.

Exploring Science

This week we are having fun with a variety of science projects.
Here the kids are observing flowers that are soaking up dye. Here SB is learning how to get the toy to the top of the test tube.
We put a marble in a test tube and then filled it 3/4 of the way with salt. Then we shook it until the marble moved to the top.
