Wonderful Field Trip

Today we toured Big John's Pizza Parlor.
Owner Andy M. was an excellent host and very generous. He taught us all how to make our very own pizza.
We put special sauce on our pizza crust...
Topped it with cheese...
and pepperoni if we wanted it.

Then we brought it into the kitchen to put it in the oven.
Here we are waiting for them to cook. Yummm....we can smell them.
Scrumptious!

"This is the best pizza we have every had."
As we left, Andy showed us the dough being rolled out.
This was so much fun! Thank you everyone at BIG JOHN'S PIZZA!
Then we headed over to the Fire Station,
where the guys had four stations for us to go through.
We got to try on their turn out gear, and learn how to hook up to a fire hydrant.

We also felt what it is like to spray water out of one of the fire hoses.
We even got to go into the tower and use the night vision tool to find someone
by their body heat.
This group put on their gear and then ran to the "pretend" fire so we could
find out what it is like to move quickly in heavy outfits.
It was a lot of fun and we admire the job the firemen do.

Good friends sharing special times together.
Thank you to all the Firemen who made this day so special to us.
After our visits, it was time for lunch. We moved on to Pioneer Park for some more fun.
Even though it was a hot day, we played hard.

Korean Day

Today CH's mom and dad came in and talked to us about a visit to South Korea. Here they are showing us some of their slides.
Mr. H also brought us some samples of cereal boxes from Korea.
Here is a wrapper off a Coca Cola bottle he got at the Olympics when they were in Seoul.
They also cooked up some "fire meat" to try. Yummy!
It was spicy, but we all really liked it.

Movie and Popcorn

We ended this week by viewing our turtle movie that reading group three produced. Here we are celebrating with juice and popcorn.

Running Out of Days

We have been so busy...sorry I have not kept up with the blog.
This is a group of readers that have studied about sea turtles.
They took their information and made a movie. They will be
showing their movie Friday at 2:15.
This week we will be wrapping up our Marble Math Unit.
The other day we did a controlled study to see which marble
would roll the farthest. Our answer: The wooden marble.

Scientist at Work

We continued out scientific exploration today.
We tested our hypothesis of whether a glass marble would
roll farther if we increased the height. Then we measured the distance with our unifix cubes
and found the average of the three results.
(Yes, the marble rolls farther if the height)
Here RL and JD are getting ready to find their average.

Parachute Music

Because "State Testing" was taking up all the space inside today, we held music outside.
Here is a short video of us singing outside.

Get Those Marbles Rolling

Today we made ramps to see if we had enough force to knock over some dominoes. Here the girls are writing their lines for a movie that they are making in reading group.
They gathered around the laptop to view short video clips to see if they could gather any more information for their movie.
Here GB is sharing his story with us. Way to go G. I like your story.
This afternoon we made ramps to test our thoughts on mass, force, and speed.

Get Those Marbles Rolling

Today we started a new math and science unit. We paired up to create ramps.
Our goal was to create a ramp that would allow our marble to roll as far as possible.
Then we put our ramps to the test.
We tried to figure out what variables influenced the speed and distance of our marble.
Tomorrow we will try again but we will throw in mass and see if that changes things.
Everyone did a great job following the rules and worked well together.

Derek Munson

We had such a fun day today. We started the day with meeting author, Derek Munson, as he autographed our books.
Then we attended an Assembly where he read his story to us.

Parts of his story made us all put on a "funny face".

Then he invited us to help him make a pie.
Here he is helping HK get ready to roll out the pie crust.
While she did that, we got to make the blueberries, strawberries and many other good things out of play dough to add to the pie.
Then AB got to put whip cream on top.
The whole can!
After adding sprinkles and a cherry, this pie was ready.
Then we needed to make the pie for our imaginary enemy. Here DA is rolling out the crust with a bowling pin.
Wouldn't want to use a good rolling pin on a pie for our enemy.
Then we wanted to put worms in our pie.
and some ????
Next we added mustard and ketchup.
The mustard didn't come out fast enough, so BP took the top off.
Then she got lots of mustard in the pie. Yummy!
MM added in some ants, while AD added gooey eyeballs.
Here Mr. Munson is giving EM his grandma's false teeth to put in the pie.
Want some?
Almost finished. Now we just need to make it look good enough to eat.
TH adds not whip cream, but something that looks like it, shaving cream. Now to top it off. Not sprinkles this time, how about kitty litter?
Derek Munson presented a wonderful lesson to us about how to
be a good person. His message is: Be nice to people and they will be nice to you.
Before lunch we also got a special art lesson.
Paul (our artist in residence) helped us create some water color paintings.
We will have two more lessons with him soon.
EM painted a sunflower.
JS a horse.
SK a humming bird.
JS decided to paint a humming bird with flowers.
Paul went around and helped each of us make decisions on our art.
CA painted a humming bird too.
And BL painted a house.
