Report Cards

Hopefully by now you have had a chance to look over the report cards.
The colored math and reading sheets are "extra" to help you see what your child's strengths and weaknesses are.
To put it simply, you want a "2" or higher. I separated each skill so you would know how to help your child learn each second grade skill. If you need any help, please let me know.
Today was the last day with our laptops. I think we are going to have major withdrawals.
We had so much fun using them for reading, math, and writing.
Oh yeah! We learned how to rename (carry) today. It was really fun and we would love to practice more if you want to help. Example: 46 + 26 = ?
For now keep all answers under 100.

We finished our Capitol Building art work today and now we are working on some great sayings to place around them. We are using some of President Obama's words from his Inauguration speech.
During reading, DC was tracking along the words as he reads at his laptop.
TM was completing his spelling test online today. Warning, next weeks words are much harder, so we will need your help learning the words.
A small group sat at the rug reading their story during reading block.
Everyone has plenty to do when we have the laptops out.
LS is working on a reading activity from my website.
Have a nice weekend!

Growing Up and Keeping a Kind Heart

Bake Sale on Friday! Bring a little money to buy a snack.
Meet Suzie Q, a girl with a beautiful kind heart.

Mrs. Thorne, our guidance councilor, shared a wonderful story about Suzie Q with us today. It is about a little girl that had a beautiful kind heart. As she grew up and discovered new places, she encountered some different situations, she got"ick" on her heart.
Ask you son/daughter to share the story with you.

Art at the Capitol Building

We are so excited with how well our Capitol Building art is turning out.
Today we painted the sky a bright blue and highlighted with streaks of pink.

We are going to put them in the hallway tomorrow for everyone to enjoy.
KS and SO spend some time reading together as they wait their turn to paint.
Don't forget...Friday is the Bake Sale. Snacks will sell for $.50 to a $1.00.

Fun In The Snow

It was so fun to finally go outside and play in the snow today.
There were many "snow tasters" out and about.

We also found out that the slide was super fast. Here SO is flying down it.
I had to venture way out in the field to wrangle up these athletes but it was well worth it.
They are great kids!

FA celebrating the great ride down the slide.
DC
DC had fun collecting chunks of snow. JC did too.

This afternoon we started typing articles for our next newspaper.
I love how focused everyone is when they use the laptops.
I don't know what we are going to do without them.

Here BB is finishing up the final touches to his pen pal letter.
TK has a little bit left to do too.
We do have a new spelling list this week.
I will also be sending home report cards this Friday.
I have created an additional portion to go with the report card
that will show you your child's strengths and weaknesses.
I hope that they will be helpful to you.

Capitol Building Illustrations

We finished our pen pal letters today.
We are becoming very good at helping each other and trouble shooting.
I am so pleased with how comfortable students are with the laptops.

This afternoon we took our second district wide math test.
We are mastering many concepts. After looking through them, it looks like many of us could use some help in rounding to the nearest ten. (example: 67 would round up to 70)

You can see on our faces that everyone is feeling confident about their math abilities.

We have been having a lot of discussions about how we would like our world to be. One site we
have used is of President Obama's letter to his daughters.
(Ignore the ad in the beginning)
We have also been talking about Washington D.C.
Here are some of our drawings of the Capitol Building.

Attendance Party

I told the kids that when we had 25 days of everyone at school on time, we would have a party. Everyone decided to have Root beer/Pepsi floats. Yummmm...I can't wait to see what they want to do when we get the next 25 days.
This afternoon we practiced what we would do if there was an earthquake.
The first thing we do is get under a table and cover our heads.
Then we head outside,
and walk to the top of the playground. It was cold, but it didn't take us long.
Here we are getting ready to watch a movie in the gym.
This was a special event Mrs. Miltenberger wanted to provide for our students.

A reminder that we don't have school Friday due to in service.
I will be attending meetings and filling in report cards.
Have a great weekend.
P.S.
Dear Pen Pals,
We have been writing our letters to you. Some of them are really long and we are excited to show you how good we are getting at writing paragraphs. We'll send them soon.

Here we are in the gym talking about how we learned to hit the volleyball.

Here we are during reading time. It is neat to see how much more we get done with the help of our laptops. Everyone is either reading, practicing spelling, or working on their typing skills.
Some students are getting good enough to type without looking at the keys.

We also started a new math class were students can get a little more time and help.

This is one of our second grade friends. He was so cute, I just had to put his picture on to share. You can see his class blog at: www.roomfivenews.blogspot.com
I got a little behind in our birthday books. We had three birthdays within the last few days.
Here is KS as she is being interviewed.

Yesterday we started our next pen pal letters.
Here LS is re-reading her letter before she responds.

EN is ready to type her letter as it sits next to her.
Wednesday we had our "Kindness" awards assembly.
The leadership students had our full attention as they were presenting special awards.
We also did our DIBELS testing today. Here are a few girls waiting for their turn.
Don't forget to be reading at least 20 minutes each night. By the end of second grade we expect second graders to be able to read 90 wpm at the second grade level.
This afternoon we took the laptops to our second grade friends next door and helped them with a writing project.
We had a great time together.

It is fun to share time and knowledge with friends. This group is bringing the laptop cases over to their room.
Mr. JC lost another tooth.
This month we focused on the character trait of kindness, and today I was honored to award these students with a special certificate. I am pleased to also announce that everyone in our room earned their kindness charm.
